The main purpose of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between school failure, defined here as years of grade repetition, and the selfconcept of 8th grade public school pupils in Campo Grande, Rio de Janeiro. Two groups of pupils were used: one with and another without any experience with grade repetition. The 'Tennessee Selfconcept Scale', developed by H. Fitts and translated and abridged by Carona in 1977, was employed in order to verify this possible relationship. This scale has 30 items with 5 alternatives to each question.
