The article examines relations between coffee planters and black workers after the abolition of slavery in the municipality of São Carlos, in Western São Paulo, focusing primarily on violent conflicts registered in criminal court records. Afro-Brazilians demanded respect and dignity, and struggled to defend their right to privacy; planters, who still resented slave rebelliousness during the last years before abolition, responded with irritation at any sign of disrespect by blacks, rapidly resorting to violence to degrade and humiliate them, a tendency less evident in planter interaction with immigrant workers.
