This article presents observations about the discourse genres in the Portuguese language textbook. Guided by the theoretical conjectures of Applied Linguistics, we aim to present the results of a investigation made about how the discourse genres are approached during the teaching learning process related to the reading, especially, in the book Linguagem Nova – 5ª série (FARACO & MOURA, 2004). The results show there is a significant and appropriated variety with the proposals of the PCNs being presented. However, the qualitative aspect of the proposed work to the genres breaks the variety.
