Contribuições preliminares da história universal de H.G. Wells: elementos de história socioevolucionista e da world history contemporânea

This article aims to analyze the book The Outline of History, published in 1919 by the English writer H.G. Wells, as representative of a historical writing genre, defined by Doris S. Goldstein as social evolutionary history. This genre had its first manifestations in the late nineteenth century, after the repercussion of Darwinian theories on some historical works, but gained more precise contours in the first decades of the twentieth century with Wells's book, the most representative of the so-called social evolutionary history. These early manifestations were retaken in new approaches in the second half of the twentieth century with the emergence of World History, corroborated by scientific discoveries in various fields of natural sciences and better grounded in their aspirations to articulate elements of evolutionary biology in the analysis of the historical process. Finally, we suggest that in Wells’s The Outline of History some elements that articulate World History are already present, such as the choice for a cosmic temporal scale associated with historical temporality itself and the criticism of national borders as artificial conventions, which hinder the development of a broader historical rationale regarding global issues.O presente artigo tem como proposta analisar a História universal, publicada em 1919 pelo escritor inglês H.G. Wells, como representante de um gênero de escrita histórica definido por Doris S. Goldstein como socioevolucionista. Esse gênero teve suas primeiras manifestações no fim do século XIX, com o início da repercussão das teorias darwinistas em algumas obras históricas, mas ganhou contornos mais precisos nas primeiras décadas do século XX, sendo o livro de Wells o mais representativo dessa historiografia. Essas primeiras manifestações foram retomadas em novas abordagens na segunda metade do século XX, com a emergência da world history, corroborada por descobertas em diversos campos das ciências naturais e mais bem fundamentada em suas aspirações de articular elementos da biologia evolutiva na análise do processo histórico. Enfim, sugerimos que, na História universal, de Wells, alguns elementos articuladores da world history estão já presentes, como a opção por uma escala temporal cósmica associada à temporalidade propriamente histórica e a crítica às fronteiras nacionais como convenções artificiais que se configuravam como empecilho ao desenvolvimento de um raciocínio histórico mais amplo e atinente a questões mundiais.
