POR QUE A CHINA IMPERIAL NÃO PENSOU A LIBERDADE? NOTAS SOBRE AS PECULIARIDADES DA TRADIÇÃO NORMATIVA CHINESA

This paper proposes a study on the normative tradition of imperial China in the context of its perceptions on mankind and nature. Its linguistic, intellectual and ethical peculiarities are taken into consideration in order to explain the reasons why liberty hasnt been a concern in classical Chinese culture. The notion is not only absent from the debates of the great Chinese thinkers, but also one cannot find in classical Chinese an ideogram that matches the idea. Why liberty, which is so constitutive of the imaginary and the prevailing discourses in the Western cultures, were absent in a civilization as sophisticated as the Chinese? In order to answer that question, we sought to expose the prevailing characteristics of imperial Chinas normativity, trying to demonstrate how its perceptions on mankind and nature tend to resist and to distance themselves from what, in the Western civilization, was thought as liberty.O presente artigo tem como objeto a tradição normativa da China imperial no contexto de suas percepções sobre o homem e o mundo. A partir de um exame de suas peculiaridades linguísticas, intelectuais e éticas, busca-se compreender as razões pelas quais não se teria produzido na cultura chinesa clássica uma preocupação com a liberdade. A noção não só está ausente dos debates dos grandes pensadores chineses, como não se encontrará na língua chinesa clássica nenhum ideograma que corresponda à ideia. Por que a liberdade, que é tão constitutiva do imaginário e dos discursos prevalecentes no Ocidente, esteve ausente em uma civilização tão sofisticada e longeva como a chinesa? Para responder essa questão, procuramos expor neste trabalho as características prevalecentes da normatividade da China imperial, tentando demonstrar como as suas percepções sobre o homem e o mundo resistem e se distanciam daquilo que no Ocidente se pensou como liberdade
