Adopting the continuous frequency mode approach and the resolvent method, we study the interaction between atoms and photons in leaky optical cavities. In particular, we highlight the physical significance of quantum states of photons in such processes. Single-photon processes and two-photon processes are intensively investigated. With single-photon scattering, various schemes for generating entangled pairs and constructing quantum gates are developed using two-level atoms or Λ-type atoms.
