Optamos pela realização de uma pesquisa quantitativa descritiva e exploratória, baseada em estatística elementar (porcentagem) como tentativa de explicar em maior profundidade o significado e as características do resultado das informações obtidas através de questões semiabertas. A população estudada é composta de membros de famílias pertencentes à classe popular, residentes no Subúrbio Ferroviário da cidade de Salvador. A proposta desta investigação surgiu a partir de lacunas existentes na literatura sobre o papel específico dos tios/tias nos contextos familiares. Por aportes teóricos foram considerados estudos sobre a teoria evolutiva humana e etologia humana bem como família e a sociedade. Respondendo às questões emergentes, pudemos supor que: a) mesmo sabendo que os pais, de modo geral, ocupam o lugar principal na vida dos filhos, tios/tias investem em seus sobrinhos e sobrinhas: i) em razão das novas configurações familiares (KEHL, 2013; DONATI, 2008); ii) por causa da aptidão inclusiva, visando a probabilidade de permanência de seus próprios genes na população (“seleção de parentes”) (SMITH, 1964); iii) considerando especificamente a população examinada, moradores de bairros periféricos de Salvador, a falta ou carência de assistência e políticas públicas a seus sobrinhos e sobrinhas influencia tios e tias a aceitar a responsabilidade de contribuir para a melhoria da vida dos sobrinhos (DAVIS-SOWERS, 2006); b) tios/tias percebem a sua participação nos processos de socialização dos sobrinhos como de grande importância. Desta forma, atuam nos mais diferentes aspectos das vidas destes, tais como o afetivo, de cuidados e financeiro. As análises forneceram informações relevantes sobre o papel de tios e tias na vida de seus sobrinhos e sobrinhas, tais como: i) o principal papel exercido pelos tios é o afetivo; ii) as tias são as mais mencionadas como atuantes em buscar o bem-estar dessas crianças, jovens e adolescentes; iii) ratifica-se a compreensão de que os outros membros da família se dispõem-se a e são aceitos nas atividades de cuidados. Por fim, não podemos deixar de pontuar que muitos questionamentos emergiram a partir deste estudo e que pesquisas posteriores, ampliando as análises e a coleta de informações, mostram-se necessárias.The present study aimed to investigate the place of uncles and aunts in the socialization of nephews, focusing on the different ways that this contribution may happen, such as: financial assistance, care and affectivity. We opted for carrying out a quantitative, descriptive and exploratory research, based on statistics (percentage) as an attempt to explain in greater depth the meaning and characteristics of the result of information obtained through semi-open questions. The population studied is composed by members of families belonging to the popular class, residents in the Suburb Railroad of the Salvador city. The proposal of this investigation emerged from existing gaps on the literature about the specific role of uncles / aunts in the family contexts. As theoretical contributions were considered studies on human evolutionary theory and human ethology as well as family and society. Responding to emerging issues, we could assume that: a) even knowing that parents, in general, occupy the main place in the children's lives, uncles / aunts invest in their nephews and nieces: i) due to the new family configurations; (ii) because of inclusive fitness, aiming at the likelihood of their own genes in the population ("selection of relatives"); iii) considering specifically the population examined, residents of outlying districts of Salvador, the lack or lack of assistance and public policies to his nephews and nieces influence uncles and aunts to accept the responsibility to contribute to the improvement of life of the nephews; b) uncles / aunts perceive their participation in processes of socialization of the nephews as of great importance. Thus, they act in the most different aspects of their lives, such as affective, financial. The analyzes provided relevant information on the role of uncles and aunts in the life of their nephews and nieces, such as: i) the main role played by uncles is the affective; ii) aunts are the most mentioned as active in seeking the welfare children and adolescents; iii) unmarried aunts and uncles are the most mentioned as caregivers; iv) the understanding that the other family members are willing to and are accepted into care activities is ratified. At long last, we cannot fail to point out many questions have emerged from this study and that further researches, broadening the analysis and gathering information are needed
