Visual culture and everyday images

Contemporary culture is based more on what we see than on what we read. It is necessary to evaluate the act of seeing as a product of the tensions created by external images and internal mental processes. The images that surround us modify not only our world and our identities, but also have an ever increasing important role in the construction of our social reality. The argument is that the linguistic categories can not keep up with the complexity of the everyday imagetics anymore. And, as familiar photography produces fictional worlds that work in accordance with a set of rules and conventions, these everyday images need to be analyzed accordingly.A cultura contemporânea está muito mais baseada naquilo que vemos do que no que lemos e é necessário avaliar o ato de ver como um produto das tensões criadas pelas imagens externas e os processos mentais internos. As imagens que nos cercam transformam não só o nosso mundo e as nossas identidades, mas têm um papel cada vez mais importante na construção da nossa realidade social. O argumento é de que categorias lingüísticas não dão mais conta da complexidade da imagética contemporânea. E, como a fotografia familiar produz mundos ficcionais que trabalham de acordo com um conjunto de regras e convenções, essas imagens do cotidiano precisam ser analisadas tendo em vista esta nova perspectiva
