Dynamic analysis of the acquisition of english plosives by brazilian learners at differente ages

The main goal of this paper was to investigate the influence that age of onset might have on the acquisition of English aspirated plosives in the beginning of stressed syllables (measured by Voice Onset Time – VOT) by Brazilian learners. Acoustic measurements of VOT duration of 30 learners who had started studying English at different ages as well as of 10 native speakers of English were used in statistical and individual analyses. The results show a tendency of negative correlation between age of onset and accuracy in VOT duration. The individual analysis highlights that it is just a tendency, for the interaction of the various elements that characterize the learners and their interlanguages into dynamic complex systems creates the emergence of idiosyncratic VOT patterns. Therefore, it was possible to find learners of each onset age group with VOT values near and far from those of the native speakers.O objetivo principal desta pesquisa foi investigar a influência que a idade no início da aquisição pode ter na aquisição da aspiração das oclusivas em início de sílaba tônica (medida pelo Voice Onset Time – VOT) do inglês por aprendizes brasileiros. Medições acústicas da duração do VOT de 30 aprendizes que começaram a estudar inglês-L2 em diferentes idades e de 10 falantes nativos de inglês foram utilizadas em análises estatísticas e análises individuais. Os resultados mostram uma tendência de correlação negativa entre a idade no início da aquisição e a acuidade na produção do VOT. A análise individual enfatiza que se trata apenas de uma tendência, pois a interação dos vários elementos que fazem dos aprendizes e de suas interlínguas sistemas complexos e dinâmicos faz emergir padrões idiossincráticos na produção do VOT. Consequentemente, foi possível encontrar aprendizes de cada faixa etária com produções de VOT tanto próximas como distantes das dos falantes nativos
