The Contigency of the Paths: Truth and Redescription in Richard Rorty

The present research aims to examine the main features of Richard Rorty's theory of truth. Rorty's pragmatism can be understood as a counterpoint to theories that purport to establish a foundational-representationalist relationship between language and the world, in which the mind behaves as a mirror capable of representing reality accurately. Based on his anti-foundationalism, Rorty proposes not a strong theory of truth, but a typology of descriptive character capable of satisfying the use we make of the term "true" in the practical-communicational scope. In this sense, its typology has a deflationary and strictly negative aspect, since it does not seek a definition of the nature of truth nor does it seek a representation of this having as a background the traditional subject-object duality, namely, the cognoscent and the known. Our author's proposal is to make philosophy remain in the field of contingency, that is, in the contextual-historical context, always open to new descriptions and, consequently, adept of new worlds and new languages.A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo examinar os principais traços que compõe a teoria da verdade de Richard Rorty. O pragmatismo de Rorty pode ser compreendido como um contraponto às teorias que têm por pretensão estabelecer uma relação de cunho fundacional-representacionista entre linguagem e mundo, nas quais a mente se comporta como um espelho capaz de representar a realidade de forma acurada. Com base em seu antifundacionismo, Rorty propõe não uma teoria da verdade em sentido forte, mas uma tipologia de caráter descritivo capaz de satisfazer o uso que efetuamos do termo “verdadeiro” no âmbito prático-comunicacional. Nesse sentido, sua tipologia tem um aspecto deflacionário e estritamente negativo, pois não procura uma definição da natureza da verdade nem busca uma representação desta tendo como pano de fundo a dualidade tradicional sujeito-objeto, a saber, o cognoscente e o conhecido. A proposta de nosso autor é fazer com que a filosofia permaneça no campo da contingência, ou seja, no âmbito histórico-contextualista, sempre aberto a novas descrições e, consequentemente, adepta de novos mundos e novas linguagens
