Study of Ex situ bioremediation of freshwater and brackish contaminated with aromatic hydrocarbons by means of microaerobic reactors

The present work had the general objective to deepen the knowledge on the application of microaerobic bioreactors in the removal of BTEX for the development of an alternative ex situ bioremediation technology of fresh and brackish water contaminated with these compounds. For this purpose, the effect of different microaeration flows (0.5-2.0 mL ∙ min-1 air), injection points (feed and headspace) and effluent recirculation (0.7 L ∙ h -1) in microaerobic degradation of BTEX (~ 4.2 mg · L-1 of each compound) in a methanogenic bioreactor (TDH = 24 h). The influence of increasing concentrations of NaCl (0.15-3.64 g · L-1) on the microaerobic degradation of these compounds was investigated, and the effect of the presence of intermediates (phenol, benzoate and toluene) was evaluated. removal efficiency of benzene under anaerobic and microaerobic conditions. Finally, the effect of the presence of the cossubstrate ethanol (1 g COD · L-1), of different concentrations of dissolved oxygen (0.88-2.65 mg · L-1) and of the acclimatization of the inoculum sludge in the anaerobic degradation of BTEX. The microaeration ensured high removal efficiencies (> 83%) for all compounds, and the best results were obtained with 1.0 mL ar ∙ min-1, particularly for benzene, with a 30% increase in removal efficiency, at microaeration condition in the feed line. Effluent recirculation proved to be an important factor in improving mass transfer and, consequently, the removal of BTEX. The volatilization of these compounds was insignificant even under microaerobic conditions, suggesting that microbial activity was the main removal mechanism. When subjected to increasing concentrations of NaCl (0.15-3.64 g · L-1), the BTEX removal efficiency decreased, reaching a decrease of 18% for benzene when the highest concentration of NaCl (3, 64 g · L-1) was added. The study with the intermediates revealed that benzene degradation was negatively impacted by the presence of benzene, even under microaerobic conditions. Finally, the presence of cossubstrate negatively affected the anaerobic degradation of BTEX only for non-acclimatized sludge, while the addition of oxygen had a positive effect only for acclimatized sludge, the best results of which were obtained at the concentration of 1.77 mg ∙ L-1 , evidencing the importance of acclimatization of the microbiota to microaerobic conditions.O presente trabalho teve o objetivo geral de aprofundar os conhecimentos sobre a aplicação de biorreatores microaeróbios na remoção de BTEX para o desenvolvimento de uma tecnologia alternativa de biorremediação ex situ de águas doces e salobras contaminadas com esses compostos. Para isso, foi avaliado o efeito de diferentes vazões de microaeração (0,5-2,0 mL ar∙min-1), pontos de injeção (linha de alimentação e headspace) e da recirculação de efluente (0,7 L∙h-1) na degradação microaeróbia de BTEX (~4,2 mg·L-1 de cada composto) em um biorreator metanogênico (TDH = 24 h). Ainda, investigou-se a influência de crescentes concentrações de NaCl (0,15-3,64 g·L-1) na degradação microaeróbia desses compostos, e avaliou-se o efeito da presença de intermediários (fenol, benzoato e tolueno) na eficiência de remoção de benzeno sob condições anaeróbias e microaeróbias. Finalmente, avaliou-se, em ensaios em batelada, o efeito da presença do cossubstrato etanol (1 g DQO·L-1), de diferentes concentrações de oxigênio dissolvido (0,88-2,65 mg·L-1) e da aclimatação do lodo de inóculo na degradação anaeróbia de BTEX. A microaeração assegurou altas eficiências de remoção (> 83%) para todos os compostos, e os melhores resultados foram obtidos com 1,0 mL ar∙min-1, particularmente para benzeno, com um aumento de 30% na eficiência de remoção, na condição de microaeração na linha de alimentação. A recirculação de efluente mostrou-se um fator importante para melhorar a transferência de massa e, consequentemente, a remoção de BTEX. A volatilização desses compostos foi insignificante mesmo sob condições microaeróbias, sugerindo que a atividade microbiana foi o principal mecanismo de remoção. Quando submetido a concentrações crescentes de NaCl (0,15-3,64 g·L-1), houve redução da eficiência de remoção de BTEX, chegando a um decréscimo de 18% para o benzeno quando a maior concentração de NaCl (3,64 g·L-1) foi adicionada. O estudo com os intermediários revelou que a degradação do benzeno era negativamente impactada pela presença dos mesmos, principalmente do benzoato, mesmo sob condições microaeróbias. Finalmente, a presença de cossubstrato afetou negativamente a degradação anaeróbia de BTEX apenas para o lodo não aclimatado, enquanto a adição de oxigênio apresentou efeito positivo apenas para o lodo aclimatado, cujos melhores resultados foram obtidos na concentração de 1,77 mg∙L-1, evidenciando a importância da aclimatação da microbiota a condições microaeróbias
