The breeding ecology of the Grey-breasted Parakeet in the Baturité Mountains, Ceará - Brazil

We studied the reproduction of the Grey-breasted Parakeet (Pyrrhura griseipecuts) in Baturite Mountains, Ceará – Brazil. This critically endangered bird is a secondary cavity-nester, and in the study site it is reproducing both in natural and artificial nests. Reproductive data (number of eggs and nestlings) were collected from 2012 to 2016 to determine reproductive phases and seasonality. Ecological data was obtained in the 2016 to estimate the reproductive success of Grey-breasted parakeet (including feeding resources available surrounding the nest, temperature, humidity, presence of helpers and nest type (natural and nest-box) and compared to estimate the influence of environmental and behavioral variables on reproductive success. The Daily Survival Rate (DSR) was calculate with software MARK 8.2 and the estimation of the breeding success of Grey-breasted parakeet. A total of 116 nests were registered between the 2012 and 2016, with 786 eggs and 576 chicks. The reproductive success based on the period of 2016, were 41 active nests of Grey-breasted Parakeet were found, which 27 occurred in nest boxes and 14 in natural nests. The results showed that the reproductive calendar of the Grey-breasted Parakeet in the Baturité Mountains is positively correlated to rainfall (rs = 0.6696 and p < 0.0001). The success of the total nests was 75.6%. The Daily Survival Rate was 72.7%. The results showed that (i) the amount of resources in nests surrounds have an important role in the reproductive success of the Grey-breasted Parakeet; (ii) there is a positive influence of the helpers on the reproductive success of the Grey-breasted Parakeet in the Baturité Mountains and; (iii) the reproductive success of the the Grey-breasted Parakeet was higher in the nest boxes than in the natural nests. The results of this study showed the importance of available resources around nest sites and the efficiency of artificial nests to this endangered species.Foi realizado estudo sobre a reprodução do periquito cara-suja (Pyrrhyra griseipectus) na serra de Baturité, Ceará. Pyrrhyra griseipectus é criticamente ameaçada de extinção e nidifica no local de estudo tanto em cavidades naturais como em artificiais. Foram coletados dados reprodutivos (número de ovos e número de ninhegos) entre os anos de 2012 a 2016 para determinação das fases reprodutivas e sazonalidade reprodutiva. Dados ecológicos obtidos no ano de 2016 (incluindo número de ovos e filhotes, recurso alimentar disponível no entorno do ninho, temperatura, umidade, presença de helpers e tipo de ninho natural ou artificial) foram utilizados para estimar e medir a influência de variáveis ambientais e comportamentais no sucesso reprodutivo. Foi utilizado o programa MARK 8.2 para calcular as Estimativas de Sobrevivência Diária (ESDs) e estimar o sucesso reprodutivo dos ninhos de P. griseipectus. Foram registrados 116 ninhos de P. griseipectus em caixa-ninho entre os anos de 2012 a 2016, com 786 ovos e 576 filhotes. No período de 2016, foram localizados 41 ninhos ativos. Destes ninhos 27 ocorreram em caixas-ninho e 14 em ninhos naturais. Os resultados mostraram que o calendário reprodutivo de P. griseipectus na serra de Baturité está correlacionado positivamente com a pluviosidade (rs = 0.6696 e p < 0.0001). O sucesso total de ninhos foi de 75,6%. A estimativa de sobrevivência diária dos ninhegos foi 72,7%. Os resultados demonstraram que (i) a quantidade de recursos no entorno dos ninhos desempenha papel influente no sucesso reprodutivo dos periquitos cara-suja; (ii) ocorre uma influência positiva dos helpers no sucesso reprodutivo de P. griseipectus na serra de Baturité e; (iii) o sucesso reprodutivo do periquito cara-suja foi maior nas caixas-ninho do que nos ninhos naturais. Os resultados deste estudo mostram a importância da disponibilidade de recursos próximos aos ninhos e a eficiência dos ninhos artificiais para esta espécie ameaçada
