Reflections on teachers’ discourse about indiscipline and poor school performance

It manages and articulates memories, ideologies and silences that constitute man and his history. From such assumptions, this study analyzes teachers’ discourse from the perspective of french discourse analysis, based on Orlandi (2003), Brandão (2004) and Maingueneau (2005). We examine the position of Portuguese Language Teachers of Junior High School on indiscipline and poor school performance. For that, six semi-structured interviews with teachers from the municipality of Barreira and seven interviews with teachers from the municipality of Redenção were conducted and recorded in audio files. Both cities are in the region of Maciço de Baturité, in the state of Ceará, situated in the Brazilian northeast. We problematize the discursive intersections present in teachers’ discourse and reflect upon the symbolic construction of reality from the perspective of these subjects, who are apparently neutral, but in mfact loaded with ideologies. In our interviews, we noticed that teachers appropriated themselves of four socially instituted ideas: a) Classroom interaction is regulated by the teacher; b) Indiscipline is the result of student’s interaction with his / her family context; c) Respect is associated with the idea of fear; d) Affectivity is the main instrument of rapprochement with students. The results point to tensions between the discourse of the current pedagogy and the discourse of traditional pedagogy, often mixed in the collected corpus statements; to the action of memory and oblivion over the analyzed discourse constitution, in the sense of reformulating pre-constructed ideas and producing the novelty effect; to the presence of other discourses, such as the sexist, capitalist, juridical and religious, also evidenced in the analyzed texts.O discurso não é neutro, nem ingênuo. Ele administra e articula memórias, ideologias e silêncios que constituem o homem e sua história. Partindo de tais pressupostos, este estudo analisa o discurso docente sob a perspectiva da Análise do Discurso francesa, fundamentando-se principalmente em Orlandi (2003), Brandão (2004) e Maingueneau (2005). Examinamos os posicionamentos de professores de Língua Portuguesa do Ensino Fundamental II sobre indisciplina e mau desempenho escolar. Para isso, foram realizadas e registradas em arquivos de áudio seis entrevistas semiestruturadas com professores do município de Barreira e sete entrevistas com professores do município de Redenção, ambos situados na região do Maciço de Baturité, no Ceará. Problematizamos os entrecruzamentos discursivos presentes no discurso docente e refletimos sobre a construção simbólica da realidade a partir do olhar desses sujeitos aparentemente neutros, mas carregados de ideologias. Em nossas entrevistas, percebemos que os docentes apropriaram-se de quatro ideias socialmente instituídas: a) A interação em sala é regulada pelo professor; b) A indisciplina é fruto da relação do aluno com seu contexto familiar; c) Respeito se associa à ideia de temor; d) Afetividade é o principal instrumento de aproximação com os alunos. Os resultados apontam para tensões entre o discurso da pedagogia atual e o discurso da pedagogia tradicional, frequentemente misturados nos enunciados do corpus coletado; para a ação da memória e do esquecimento, na constituição do discurso analisado, no sentido de reformular pré construídos e produzir o efeito de novidade; para a presença de discursos outros, como o sexista, o capitalista, o jurídico e o religioso, também evidenciada nos textos analisados
