The role of the drives in shaping morality

This dissertation proposes to examine the different drive theories throughout Freud's work, with the aim of detaching from them a reflection about the moral. It is precisely due to the changes in the conception of the drives that we can not present them as a final concept, but in construction throughout the work, and endowed with different nuances according to the time, although, on the other hand, the subsequent theories, rather than opposed are actually complementary. With regard to the first formulation of the theory, dated 1905, the main point to note is that it focuses almost exclusively on sexual drives while those of self (or self-preservation) are mentioned very briefly Later, in the second theory, the drives of the self acquire relevance from the work Introduction to Narcissism of 1914. In 1921, both drives, sexual and self-preservation, become components of a more comprehensive drive: the drive of life, which opposes it, completing the dualism, to the death drive. In 1923 a new text by Freud will be published “The Ego and the Id”, where maintaining the third drive theory, presents a new terminology with great repercussion in the later works of the author. It is within the framework of the different theories that we will see the relationship of the drives with the moral, following three distinctive elements: the resignation, the desire and the guilt. Es justamente debido a las mudanzas en la concepción de las pulsiones que no podemos presentarlas como un concepto final, sino en construcción a lo largo de la obra, y dotado de diferentes matices según la época, aunque, por otro lado, las subsecuentes teorías más que opuestas, son en realidad complementarias. En lo que respecta a la primera formulación de la teoría, fechada en 1905, el principal punto a destacar es que se enfoca casi únicamente en las pulsiones sexuales, mientras que a las de yo (o de autoconservación) las menciona muy someramente. Posteriormente, en la segunda teoría, las pulsiones del yo, adquieren relevancia a partir de la obra Introducción al Narcisismo de 1914. En 1921, ambas pulsiones, sexuales y de autoconversación, devienen componentes de una pulsión más abarcante: la pulsión de vida, a la que le contrapone, completando el dualismo, la pulsión de muerte. En 1923 será publicado un nuevo texto de Freud, “El Yo y el Ello” donde manteniendo vigente la tercera teoría pulsional, presenta una nueva terminología con gran repercusión en las posteriores obras del autor. Es en el marco de las diferentes teorías que veremos la relación de las pulsiones con la moral, siguiendo tres elementos distintivos: la renuncia, el deseo y la culpa. A partir de la inevitable renuncia a la satisfacción pulsional, se constituye la cultura, bien sea procesada en el modelo preferible de la sublimación y produciendo obras de arte o de innovación científica, tecnológica, etc.; o bien, lo sea en el modelo patogénico de la represión, tornando neurótica a la sociedad. De una forma u otra, la sociedad surge a partir de la renuncia a la satisfacción de las necesidades pulsionales y de sus diferentes destinos. Posteriormente, respecto de la segunda nota; será deseo homosexual sublimado el que una a los hombres en una sociedad, así como fue también el deseo heterosexual el que despertó sentimientos agresivos que derivaron ulteriormente en un parricidio original, del cual, mediante la culpa, se instituyen esquemáticamente las normas morales y religiosas de toda sociedad.
