Evaluation of a solar desalinator with heat recovery with a new arrangement of the heating for thermal oil operation

Due to the increasing demand for potable water, as well as the rising levels of pollution in natural water reservoirs, performance improvements in a solar thermal desalination system with heat recovery tower is not only a challenge, but also a necessity. The solar desalination system studied has two main units: a heating unit and a desalination unit. The heating unit has three flat solar collectors, two of these made in Europe as part of another project, and the third one was manufactured in the solar laboratory. The desalination unit consists of a one storage tank and seven desalination stages, each with its own tray. Among other modifications, the main difference between the present system and its predecessors was the use of a heat exchanger inside the storage tank. Thus, the solar radiation absorbed by the collectors was transferred in the heat exchanger (made of a copper pipes) to the water stored in the tank, mainly by conduction and forced convection. An oil pump was responsible for the flow of the thermal oil through the closed circuit of the heating unit. Part of the heated water stored in the tank evaporated, rose, and condensed on the lower surface of the less heated tray of the first stage above, heating the brackish water in this tray. The present dissertation evaluated the solar desalination system with heat recovery, operating with the modifications presented and a synthetic thermal oil flow (Dowtherm A) as the working fluid. To characterize the performance of the thermal desalination system, the water production and its quality were measured for two different water supply conditions to the tower: continuous feed and intermittent feed. The system was also tested with flat plate reflectors fixed on the solar collector. Two important parameters, the Output Gain Ratio (GOR) and the Performance Coefficient (COP) were determined. The best desalinate water (almost pure) production was 34 L per day (198.1 mL / MJ) with an average electrical conductivity of 14.9 μS / cm (equivalent to 9.5513 ppm). On this day, the GOR and COP were 0.44 and 4.41, respectively. The system is in conditions to be tested in communities where there is a good level of solar radiation and saltwater resources.Devido à crescente demanda por água potável, assim como o aumento dos níveis de poluição nos reservatórios naturais de água, os aperfeiçoamentos em sistema de dessalinização solar térmico com torre de recuperação de calor não é somente um desafio, mas também uma necessidade. O Sistema de dessalinização solar possui duas partes principais: uma unidade de aquecimento e uma unidade de dessalinização. O unidade de aquecimento tem três coletores solares planos, dois destes fabricados na Europa como parte de outro projeto, e o terceiro foi fabricado no laboratório. A unidade de dessalinização consiste de um tanque de armazenamento e sete estágios de dessalinização, cada um com sua respectiva bandeja. Entre outras modificações, a diferença principal entre o sistema e seus antecessores foi a utilização de um trocador de calor dentro do tanque de armazenamento. Portanto, a radiação solar absorvida pelos coletores foi transferida pelo trocador de calor (composto por uma tubulação de cobre) para a água armazenada no tanque, por condução e convecção forçada. Uma bomba de óleo era responsável pelo escoamento do óleo térmico no circuito fechado da unidade de aquecimento. Parte da água armazenada aquecida se evaporava, subindo, e condensando na superfície inferior da bandeja menos aquecida do primeiro estágio, aquecendo a água salobra desta bandeja. O objetivo da presente dissertação é avaliar o sistema de dessalinização solar com recuperação de calor, operando com as modificações apresentadas e um fluxo de óleo térmico sintético (Dowtherm A) como fluido de trabalho. Para caracterizar o desempenho do sistema térmico, a produção de água e a sua respectiva qualidade foi medida para duas diferentes condições de alimentação de água nas bandejas: alimentação contínua, alimentação intercalada. O sistema também foi testado com refletores planos fixados no coletor solar. Dois parâmetros importantes, a Razão de Ganho de Saída (GOR) e o Coeficiente de Desempenho (COP) foram também determinados. A melhor produção foi de 34 L por dia (198,1 mL/MJ) com uma condutividade elétrica média de 14,9 μS/cm (equivalente a 9,5513 ppm). Neste mesmo dia, o GOR e o COP foram de 0,44 e 4,41, respectivamente. O sistema está em condição de ser utilizado em comunidades onde existe um bom nível de radiação solar e recursos de água salgada
