OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of tilapia skin as a temporary occlusive dressing in superficial and deep second degree burns in rats. METHODS: A prospective, qualitative and quantitative study, in which 40 Wistar rats randomly divided into four groups and underwent surgery for burn production: C1, the wounds were washed with saline solution; C2, open dressing treated with silver sulfadiazine 1%; T1, superficial 2nd degree burn treated with an occlusive dressing of tilapia skin; and T2, deep 2nd degree burn also treated with tilapia skin. The animals were treated for 22 consecutive days. Blood was collected for hematological and biochemical tests on the last day and the animals were euthanized for histological analysis of the wound.
