Specifically, it aims at understanding which linguistic strategies interactants use in the negotiation of identities in two telephone-mediated service encounters. This research was conducted through the combination of three distinct, but compatible paradigms: conversational analysis, sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology. I argue that, in the interactions investigated, there is complementarity and tension between local identities (consumer/call taker) and social identities that transcend the call itself (geographic origin and social class). I conclude that code switching is the linguistic tool interlocutors prefer to forge local identities, especially when these identities relate to those that transcend the service call.Este artigo investiga como identidades são negociadas em contextos de interação social. Especificamente, objetiva-se compreender quais são as estratégias linguísticas empregadas na negociação de identidades em duas interações telefônicas de solicitação de prestação de serviço. A pesquisa é desenvolvida a partir do diálogo de três áreas distintas, porém compatíveis: análise conversacional, sociolinguística e antropologia linguística. Argumenta-se que, nas interações estudadas, há complementaridade e tensão entre identidades locais (cliente/prestador de serviço) e identidades sociais que transcendem o telefonema (origem geográfica e classe social). Conclui-se que a alternância de códigos é o principal recurso linguístico utilizado pelos interlocutores para forjar identidades locais, especialmente quando estas se relacionam a identidades sociais que transcendem o contato telefônico
