Historical-cultural psychology's contributions to the understanding of old age

Revista Eletrônica Arma da Crítica, Fortaleza, n. 6, p. 99-116, out. 2015.This article aims at discoursing about the main activity in the old age, taking as point of reference, the assumptions of Cultural-Historical Psychology through the review of literature and interviews conducted with 10 retired seniors. This psychological school presents presuppositions that overcome the biological perspective, so common in the understanding of human development, which is herein characterized as periods influenced by historical conditions of the humanity marked by main or dominant activities. In a few words, it is noted that work seems to be the main activity in the old age, nevertheless, the relationship that the elderly maintain with their job is different from that one accomplished throughout adult life. In fact, most of the time they do not feel valued in a capitalist society in which people are worth at the rate of their production. The ageing process, according to Vygotsky school authors, is rooted in the social relations of production and must be understood through the analysis of these relations.Este artigo objetiva discorrer sobre a atividade principal da velhice, tomando como referência os pressupostos da Psicologia Histórico-Cultural, a partir da realização de uma pesquisa bibliográfica e entrevistas com 10 idosos aposentados. Esta escola psicológica apresenta conceitos que superam o olhar biologizante tão comum nas compreensões sobre o desenvolvimento humano, caracterizando-o como períodos que são influenciados pelas condições históricas da humanidade e marcados por atividades principais ou dominantes. A título de conclusão pode-se observar que a velhice parece ter como atividade principal o trabalho, porém, a relação que o idoso mantém com o trabalho mostra-se diferente do período da vida adulta, uma vez que, na maioria das vezes se sente desvalorizado em uma sociedade capitalista na qual as pessoas valem pelo tanto que produzem. A velhice, para os autores da Escola de Vigotski, está alicerçada nas relações sociais de produção e deve ser compreendida a partir da análise dessas relações
