Validation of the jealousy questionnaire to brazilian portuguese and its associations with affective temperaments and psychopathological dimensions in a large sample

The present work sought to investigate the relationships between jealous dimensions with affective temperaments and psychopathological variables in a large sample. Jealousy can be defined as the sense of threat, real or imagined, of the loss of the partner. Affective temperaments are inheritable and stable personality traits, which may contribute to the emergence and expression of affective disorders. Despite their relationships with pathologies, associations between temperaments and dimensions of jealousy were not found in the literature. Therefore, the present study was carried out in order to develop the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Jealous Questionnaire and to investigate its factorial structure in a large sample; Analyze associations between different types of jealousy and affective temperaments, and study the association between psychopathological dimensions and jealousy. For this purpose, validation was performed for the Brazilian Portuguese Questionnaire Della Gelosia, originating the Jealous Questionnaire, and the associations of the dimensions of jealousy with affective temperaments and psychopathological variables were studied. For the collection of data, a website was used (Temperament and Mental Health portal) containing instruments that investigate the types of temperaments and jealousy. The sample consisted of 2,042 participants, with a mean age of 28.9 years, the majority of whom were female (71.0%), single civil status (63.4%), and had a good level of schooling (97, 7% high school) and in a relationship (60.9%). The questionnaire showed high internal consistency, with Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.94 for the instrument and 0.72-0.94 for the individual jealous dimensions. Confirmatory factorial analysis provided a five-factor model for the Jealousy Questionnaire with the dimensions self-esteem, paranoia, interpersonal sensitivity, fear of abandonment, and obsession. The anxious, irritable, cyclothymic and depressive temperaments were independently associated with jealous dimensions, while the hypertrophic temperament was associated with lower score in the jealous self-esteem dimension (N = 2.041, P <0.001). Subtypes of jealousy were differently associated with the psychopathological dimensions of the revised Symptom Check List, while the jealousy dimension "obsession" was not significantly associated with scores of the psychopathological variables. A consecutive sample was used. The cross-section of the research prevents the establishment of causal inferences. Our data indicate that a five-factor solution may provide the best fit model for the Jealousy Questionnaire. Different subtypes of jealousy were independently associated with affective temperaments and psychopathological dimensions. These associations reported here should be confirmed in prospective studies.O presente trabalho buscou investigar as relações entre dimensões de ciúme com temperamentos afetivos e variáveis psicopatológicas em uma grande amostra. Ciúme pode ser definido como a sensação de ameaça, real ou imaginária, da perda do (a) parceiro (a). Temperamentos afetivos são traços de personalidade herdáveis e estáveis, podendo contribuir para o surgimento e a expressão de transtornos afetivos. A despeito de suas relações com patologias, não foram encontradas na literatura associações entre temperamentos e dimensões de ciúme. Portanto, o presente estudo foi realizado a fim desenvolver a versão em Português brasileiro do Questionário de Ciúme e investigar sua estrutura fatorial em uma grande amostra; analisar associações entre diferentes tipos de ciúme e temperamentos afetivos, e estudar a associação entre dimensões psicopatológicas e ciúme. Para tanto, foi realizada a validação para o português brasileiro do Questionario Della Gelosia, originando o Questionário de Ciúme, e estudadas as associações das dimensões de ciúme com temperamentos afetivos e variáveis psicopatológicas. Para a coleta de dados, foi utilizado um site na internet (portal Temperamento e Saúde Mental) contendo instrumentos que investigam os tipos de temperamentos e ciúme. A amostra foi composta por 2.042 participantes, com idade média de 28.9 anos, sendo a maior parte composta por indivíduos do sexo feminino (71,0%), estado civil solteiro (63,4%), com bom nível de escolaridade (97,7% ensino médio completo) e em um relacionamento (60,9%). O questionário mostrou alta consistência interna, com o coeficiente alfa de Cronbach de 0,94 para o instrumento, e 0,72-0,94 para as dimensões individuais de ciúme. A análise fatorial confirmatória forneceu um modelo de cinco fatores para o Questionário de Ciúme com as dimensões autoestima, paranoia, sensibilidade interpessoal, medo do abandono, e obsessão. Os temperamentos ansioso, irritável, ciclotímico e depressivo foram independentemente associados com dimensões ciúme, enquanto o temperamento hipertímico foi associado com menor pontuação na dimensão ciúme autoestima (N = 2.041, P
