This study aimed to survey the ichthyofauna occurring in the Choró, Curu, Pacoti and Pirangi estuaries (Ceará-Brasil); test the hypothesis that the fish assemblages change among estuarine zones, among periods of the year and among estuaries; test the morphological patterns of fish assemblage under the hypothesis that different morphological attributes suggest different forms of resources exploitation; and test the trait-environment relationship of fish assemblage along the estuaries. In the years 2014 and 2015 fish samples were taken in the main channel of the estuaries with seine and cast net. Abundances, biomasses and classification of fish species by use the estuarine environment, trophic and position in the water column guilds were obtained. Salinity and substrate type were measured. Fifteen functional traits related to ecological characteristics as the habitat use, locomotion and diet were obtained. Temporal and spatial variations in the species, families and guilds compositions were plotted with non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). To verify the fish assemblages differences were performed PERMANOVA. Species, families and guilds with emphasis on the separation of the groups were identified using percentage of similarity analysis (SIMPER). Principal component analysis (PCA) assessed trends in interspecific variation in the fish assemblage. The null hypothesis that the morphological patterns of fish species are independent of the groups formed by the guilds was tested using PERMANOVA. With the rejection of the null hypothesis, canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) evaluated the ecomorphological relations. It conducted double inertia RLQ analysis to verify the relationship among the functional traits and the habitat structure. The statistical significance among the functional traits and habitat structure was assessed by permutation tests with the null models 2 and 4. Fourth-corner analysis details the RLQ patterns to determine the significance of bivariate associations. A total of 104 fish species were collected in the four estuaries, representing 19 orders and 45 families, with few species dominating in abundance or biomass and 96 new reports. The most representative guilds in number of species were marine, followed by the estuarine and freshwater guilds. The Curu estuary presented different abundances of species. The Choró, Curu and Pacoti estuaries showed distinct taxonomic and functional abundances among their zones. The estuaries did not change the fish composition temporally. The morphology of fishes explain in part the use of resources. Estuaries were homogenous regarding the distribution of fish functional traits, so that the habitat characteristics did not act in functionally select the assemblage composition. Taxonomic metrics were efficient in showing patterns, but the functional metrics also provided comparisons of the estuarine fish fauna components. This study presents new reports of fish species to estuaries from Ceará state and shows spatio-temporal patterns for three negative estuaries of northeastern Brazil with taxonomic and functional approaches.Estuários abrigam grande riqueza de peixes que respondem às condições ambientais de diversas maneiras. Este estudo objetivou listar as espécies de peixes nos estuários dos rios Choró, Curu, Pacoti e Pirangi (Ceará-Brasil); testar a hipótese de que as estruturas das assembleias de estuários mudam entre zonas estuarinas, períodos do ano e entre estuários; analisar os padrões morfológicos das assembleias sob a hipótese de que diferentes atributos morfológicos sugerem variadas formas de exploração dos recursos; e testar a relação traçoambiente sob a hipótese de que mudanças na composição funcional ao longo dos estuários reflete essa relação. Nos anos de 2014 e 2015 foram realizadas coletas de peixes no canal principal dos estuários com arrasto e tarrafa. Foram obtidas as abundâncias, biomassas e a classificação das espécies de peixes por guilda de uso do ambiente estuarino, guilda trófica e posição na coluna d‟água. Salinidade e tipo de substrato foram medidos. Quinze traços funcionais foram obtidos, relacionando características ecológicas quanto ao uso do habitat, locomoção e alimentação. Variações temporais, espaciais e entre estuários quanto a espécies, famílias e guildas foram plotados com escalonamento multidimensional não-métrico (NMDS). Para verificar se as estruturas das assembleias apresentam diferenças foram realizadas análises de PERMANOVA. As espécies, famílias e guildas destacadas foram identificadas usando análise de similaridade de porcentagens (SIMPER). Uma análise de componentes principais (PCA) avaliou tendências nas variações interespecíficas na assembleia. A hipótese nula de que os padrões morfológicos das espécies são independentes dos grupos formados pelas guildas foi testada usando PERMANOVA. Com a rejeição da hipótese nula, a análise discriminante canônica (CDA) foi utilizada para avaliar as relações ecomorfológicas. Foi conduzida análise de dupla inércia RLQ para analisar a relação entre os traços funcionais das espécies e a estrutura do habitat. A significância estatística entre os traços funcionais e as variáveis de hábitat foi verificada por testes de permutação com os modelos nulos 2 e 4. A análise de Fourth-Corner detalhou os padrões da RLQ de modo a averiguar a significância de associações bivariadas. Foram coletadas nos quatro estuários 104 espécies de peixes, compreendendo 19 ordens e 45 famílias, com poucas espécies dominando em abundância ou biomassa e 96 novas ocorrências. As guildas mais representativas em número de espécies são as marinhas, seguida pela estuarina e pelas dulcícolas. O estuário do Curu apresentou diferentes abundâncias taxonômicas. Já os estuários do Choró, Curu e Pacoti apresentaram distintas abundâncias taxonômicas e funcionais entre suas zonas. Temporalmente os estuários não variaram suas composições ícticas. Os traços da assembleia de peixes explicam, em parte, a utilização dos recursos. Os estuários apresentaram-se homogêneos quanto à distribuição dos traços funcionais dos peixes, de modo que as características ambientais não atuaram em selecionar funcionalmente a composição da assembleia. As métricas taxonômicas foram eficientes em mostrar padrões, mas as funcionais também forneceram comparações a respeito dos componentes da fauna de peixes estuarina. O presente estudo apresenta novas ocorrências de espécies de peixes para estuários e mostra padrões espaço-temporais para três estuários negativos do Nordeste brasileiro
