Characterization of the acoustic isolation of recycled polymers with bamboo fibers using the sound absorption coefficient in impedance test tubes

The use of vegetal fibers added to polymers has been considerably increasing over the last few years, both for economic reasons as for environmental concerns. As an example of the latter, we have the new European directive (2009 Renewable Energy Directive) which stablishes increasing use of renewable energy and overall reduction of energy consumption as a target for 2020. One of the polymers with greater diversity of applications and diversity of use is the Polypropylene. The material itself is difficult to degrade naturally so an incentive is necessary to recycle, recover and reuse it. Within this context, and with a growing social concern for environmentally sustainable solutions, there is the prospect of using plant fibers (typically abundant in tropical regions such as the Brazilian Northeast) in conjunction with this polymer to see if the mechanical and acoustic properties of the proposed composites are suited to those required by current safety and comfort standards. Once one possible combination of bamboo fibers and polypropylene meet the requirements of a particular application and after setting up a viable manufacturing method, it is possible to replace the materials used by the industry today by new less aggressive substances to the environment and, probably, lower indirect economic costs. Among the main results, the composite of recycled polypropylene with treated fibers and bi-directionally oriented presented a sound absorption coefficient up to 95% higher than the recycled polypropylene without any fibers.A utilização de polímeros adicionados de fibras vegetais vem aumentando consideravelmente nos últimos anos, por motivações tanto econômicas quanto ambientais. Como exemplo desta última, tem-se a nova diretriz europeia (2009 Renewable Energy Directive) que estabelece a maior utilização de energias renováveis e redução geral de consumo energético nos transportes como meta para 2020. Um dos polímeros com maior diversidade de aplicações e versatilidade de uso é o Polipropileno. O material em si é de difícil degradação natural, de modo que se faz necessário um incentivo à reciclagem, recuperação e reutilização do mesmo neste cenário. Dentro deste âmbito, e com uma crescente preocupação da sociedade por soluções ambientalmente sustentáveis, surge a perspectiva de utilizar fibras vegetais (tipicamente abundante em regiões tropicais como é o caso do Nordeste brasileiro) em conjunto com este polímero para verificar se as propriedades mecânicas e acústicas dos compósitos propostos atendem às requeridas pelos padrões de segurança e conforto vigentes. Uma vez encontrada alguma combinação possível de fibras de bambu e polipropileno que atenda às exigências de uma determinada aplicação e estabelecendo-se um método de fabricação viável, é possível substituir os materiais hoje utilizados pela indústria por novas substâncias menos agressivas ao meio ambiente e, provavelmente, de menor custo econômico indireto. Dentre os principais resultados deste trabalho, o compósito de polipropileno reciclado com fibras tratadas orientadas bidirecionalmente apresentou coeficiente de absorção sonora 95% do que o polipropileno reciclado sem adição de fibras
