It pinpoints the role of the expressive growth of the number of students in the country from the end of the 1960s, in all levels of education, as one of the factors that strongly influenced the performance of the sector in the mentioned years, especially that of the didactic and academic books.Com base em dados estatísticos sobre a produção de livros no Brasil entre as décadas de 1960 e 1980 e em informações relativas às políticas do governo federal para o setor livreiro, este artigo procura mostrar e analisar as mudanças por que passou a indústria editorial (livros) no Brasil nesse período, em particular nos anos da abertura política (1974-1985). Destaca-se nesta análise o papel do expressivo crescimento do número de estudantes no país a partir do final dos anos 1960, em todos os níveis de ensino, como um dos fatores que influenciaram fortemente o desempenho do setor editorial nesses anos, especialmente do setor de livros didáticos e acadêmicos
