Aspectos de uma teoria da mudança linguística

Revista de Letras, Fortaleza, v. 30, n.1/4, 2010/2011, p. 171-183.By delimiting the domain and the object of study of the Theory of Linguistic Change, we will concisely discuss the most prominent theoretical concepts important to the understanding of the diverse processes by which the linguistic elements and systems change in the diachronic dimension. It is presumed that there are three different forms of loss of balance or ruptures of the linguistic continuity: the substitution of a variety, the union of varieties and the split of a variety. Therefore the Theory of Linguistic Change should deal with five essential subjects: (i) the general structural conditions that determine the inherent change of the system; (ii) the process of transition with its intermediate phases; (iii) the embedding of an innovation in the linguistic system and in the sociolinguistic context; (iv) the importance of evaluation for the process by which variations are generalized and (v) the analysis of the problem of how a process of change gets started. In the analysis of these problems, it is convenient to distinguish two different groups of linguistic variations that can become the source of permanent linguistic changes: (i) the variations that are associated with the articulatory-perceptive realization of linguistic actions and (ii) the variations that can be explained by language use in social-communicative and social activities. Reflecting about the causes and the purposes of the change and about the close connection between evolution and change in general, we will shed light on the different fields of action of linguistic change and we will explain, shortly, how the formation and the spreading of linguistic innovations may take place.Delimitando o domínio e o objeto de estudo da teoria da mudança linguística, discutiremos resumidamente os conceitos teóricos mais relevantes sobre os diversos processos pelos quais mudam os elementos e sistemas linguísticos na dimensão diacrônica. Pressupõe-se que existam três diferentes formas de desequilíbrio ou rupturas da continuidade linguística: a substituição de uma variedade, a união de variedades e a cisão de uma variedade. Assim sendo, a teoria da mudança linguística deve ocupar-se de cinco assuntos essenciais: (i) das condições gerais da estrutura para que a mudança inerente ao sistema possa se realizar; (ii) do processo de transição com suas fases intermediárias; (iii) do encaixamento de uma inovação no sistema linguístico e no contexto sociolinguístico; (iv) da importância da avaliação para o processo de generalização das variações e (v) da análise do problema de como se inicia um processo de mudança. Na análise desses problemas, convém distinguir dois grupos diferentes de variações linguísticas que podem tornar-se fonte de mudanças permanentes da língua: (i) as variações que se formam na realização articulatório-perceptiva das ações linguísticas e (ii) as variações que podem ser explicados pelo uso da língua nas atividades sociocomunicativas e sociais. Refletindo sobre causas e finalidades das mudanças e sobre a ligação íntima entre a evolução e a mudança em geral, lançaremos um olhar para os diferentes campos de ação da mudança linguística, bem como expliletras caremos, brevemente, como se passam a formação e a divulgação das inovações linguísticas
