Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are an important cause of morbidity throughout the world with considerable medical and socio-economic repercussions. To assess the epidemiological situation of STD among women of reproductive age in a small municipality in the hinterland of Ceará, a population-based study was conducted in January and February 2001. The study consisted of application of structured questionnaires, gynecological examination and laboratory diagnosis to detect HPV, chlamydia, trichomonas, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV.
