Association of the crab Holothuriophilus tomentosus Ortmann, 1872 (Crustacea: Pinnotheridae) with the sea-cucumber Duasmodactyla seguroensis (Deichmann, 1930) (Holothurioidea: Cucumariidae)

The sea-cucumber, Duasmodactyla seguroensis Ortmann, 1872 is characterized by its living buried in sandyslimy substrates, at an average depth of 10 cm, but usually found also near the surface. It presents a long digestive tract with a big and large rectum. Holothuriophilus tomentosus is a small marine or estuarine crab. Adults may live free, mainly males, or associated with animals such as endocommensals, as parasites of bivalves, ascidians, on echinoderms or inhabiting polychaete tubules.This study reports, for the first time in Brazil, the presence of this crab inside the seacucumber H. tomentosus, where 50% of the samples were found, the majority of which being ovigerous females, found in the gut, respiratory tree and near to the calcareous ring. It is a known fact that these relationships often depend on food and space availability and on the increase in predation, which prevent these crabs from seeking shelter.O pepino-do-mar, Duasmodactyla seguroensis Ortmann, 1872 é um holoturideo que se caracteriza por viver enterrado em substratos areno-lodosos a uma profundidade média de escavação de 10 cm, mas usualmente encontra-se próxima à superfície. Apresenta um sistema digestivo longo com reto grande e largo. Holothuriophilus tomentosus é um caranguejo de pequeno porte, marinho ou estuarino. Os adultos podem ocorrer livres, principalmente os machos, ou associados a outros animais como endocomensais ou parasitos em bivalvos, ascidias, sobre equinodermos ou habitando tubos de poliquetos. O presente estudo objetivou registrar pela primeira vez no país a presença deste caranguejo no intestino do pepino do mar. H. tomentosus foi encontrado em 50% das amostras, a maioria eram fêmeas ovígeras e se encontrava no intestino, árvore respiratória e próxima ao anel calcáreo. Sabe-se que essas relações dependem muitas vezes da disponibilidade de alimento, espaço e do aumento da predação, obrigando esses caranguejos a procurarem refúgio
