Objectives: To characterize the profile of mothers with positive human immunodeficiency virus (HIV+) and birth conditions of newborns. Method: A retrospective descriptive study, quantitative approach performed in a public maternity in Fortaleza, Ceará-Brazil. All the participants were HIV + seropositive mothers and their newborns admitted in 2009, totaled 27, recorded in the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (NUVE). Results: the mothers, 37.0% were aged between 21-25 years, 11.1% used drugs, 48.1% had had one to two pregnancies, 40.7% had not carried out at least six prenatal consultations, 96, 3% had a cesarean delivery, 74.0% used Zidovudine (AZT).
