Evidence is scarce regarding the impact of competition on efficiency in banking, even if it represents a very relevant issue to assess the benefits of a heightened banking competition. This work investigates the relationship between competition and efficiency in banking on a sample of 60 Brazilian’s banks during the period 2000 2004. Competition is measured by the Rosse-Panzar H-Statistic. Efficiency is estimated with 4 different nonparametric approaches: data envelopment analysis; free disposal hull; the model proposed by Simar and Wilson (2000); and the order-m estimator of Cazal et al (2002).
