Dividendos e reação do mercado: uma análise sob o enfoque das teorias do fluxo de caixa livre e da sinalização

The present research has the objective of analyzing the existing relationship of dividend policy of companies with shares traded in Brazil, Stock Exchange and Counter (B3) and the market reaction to the announcement of dividend payment with theories of signaling and free cash flow, during the period 1997 to 2017. The sample consisted of 750 announcements of the approval of the payment of dividends and interest on shareholders' equity of 53 companies listed in B3. Different methodologies were used to achieve the research objective. Firstly, an event study was conducted to identify accumulated abnormal returns (CARs) from -5 to +5 days around the date of the announcement of the payment of dividends and interest on equity. Then, in order to understand the theoretical explanation of the dividend policy in Brazil, the panel data regression technique was used to analyze the relation between the payout ratio and the free cash flow (FCF) and the expectation of future profitability (LF). The control variables employed to control the determinants of the dividend policy were represented by size, growth opportunities, indebtedness and risk. Regarding the results of the research, through the study of events, evidence of abnormal returns was found on the first and second day after the announcement of the dividend payment, indicating that these are relevant to the Brazilian capital market. Then, with regressions in panel data, it was verified that there is a positive and significant relationship at the level of 1%, between the payout index and the FCF interest variable, corroborating that companies with higher free cash flows have the ability to pay higher dividends. On the other hand, it was not possible to find a significant relationship between the LF variable and the payout index, not confirming the H3 hypothesis. Finally, in the analysis of the relation between accumulated abnormal returns (CARs) and theories of Signaling and Free Cash Flow, it was not possible to prove that the average returns in response to the announcement of the payment of dividends are higher in companies with excess investments and that investors anticipate the increase in dividends for value-enhancing companies in the Brazilian stock market. The findings of the present research contribute to the scientific field by encouraging empirical studies on the relevance of dividend policy and the capital market in assisting decision making by highlighting the relevance of the dividends represented by the abnormal returns around the date of the announcement of the payment of dividends, signaling good news to the market.NenhumaA presente pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar a relação existente da política de dividendos das empresas com ações negociadas na Brasil, Bolsa e Balcão (B3) e a reação do mercado ao anúncio do pagamento de dividendos com as teorias da sinalização e do fluxo de caixa livre, durante o período 1997 a 2017. A amostra consistiu em 750 anúncios da aprovação do pagamento de dividendos e juros sobre o capital próprio de 53 empresas listadas na B3. Foram empregadas diferentes metodologias para alcançar o objetivo de pesquisa. Primeiramente, realizou-se um estudo de eventos buscando identificar retornos anormais acumulados (CARs) de -5 a +5 dias em torno da data do anúncio do pagamento de dividendos e juros do capital próprio. Em seguida, buscando compreender a explicação teórica da política de dividendos no Brasil, empregou-se a técnica da regressão em dados em painel para analisar a relação entre o índice payout e o fluxo de caixa livre (FCF) e a expectativa de lucratividade futura (LF). As variáveis de controle empregadas para controlar os fatores determinantes da política de dividendos foram representadas pelo tamanho, oportunidades de crescimento, endividamento e risco. No tocante aos resultados da pesquisa, por meio do estudo de eventos, encontraram-se evidências de retornos anormais no primeiro e segundo dia que sucedeu a data do anúncio do pagamento de dividendos, indicando que estes são relevantes ao mercado de capitais brasileiro. Em seguida, por meio do emprego das regressões em dados em painel, verificou-se que há uma relação positiva e significante ao nível de 1%, entre o índice payout e a variável de interesse FCF, corroborando que empresas com maiores fluxos de caixa livres têm a capacidade de pagar maiores dividendos. Por outro lado, não foi possível encontrar uma relação significante entre a variável LF e o índice payout, não confirmando a hipótese H3 de pesquisa. Por fim, na análise da relação dos retornos anormais acumulados (CARs) e as teorias da Sinalização e do Fluxo de Caixa Livre, não foi possível comprovar que os retornos médios em resposta ao anúncio do pagamento de dividendos são maiores nas empresas com excessos de investimentos e que os investidores antecipam o aumento de dividendos para empresas maximizadoras de valor no mercado acionário brasileiro. Os achados da presente pesquisa contribuem para o campo científico ao fomentar estudos empíricos sobre a relevância da política de dividendos e ao mercado de capitais no auxílio da tomada de decisões ao evidenciar a relevância dos dividendos representado pelos retornos anormais em torno da data do anúncio do pagamento de dividendos, sinalizando boas notícias ao mercado
