O efeito do sentimento das notícias sobre o comportamento dos preços no mercado acionário brasileiro

This paper aimed to investigate the effect of the textual sentiment of the financial news on asset prices in the Brazilian Stock Exchange, seeking theoretical support in the agreement theorem, in the negativity bias and in the efficient market hypothesis. In order to analyze the effect of the tone of the news on asset prices. I verified the influence the textual sentiment of the news exerted on the IBOVESPA index return and the risk (volatility of the return); also I analyzed the influence of textual sentiment on the forecast market risk. This study used to daily data of the following index: IBOVESPA, DJIA, VIX and S&P500. As for the texts of financial columns from the newspaper Valor Econômico (45.304 articles). I analyzed the period of July 25, 2011 to June 30, 2017, corresponding to 1.470 daily observations. The choice of predictors of volatility was performed by l-penalized (LASSO) quantile regression method and the impact of the sentiment on the market was evaluated by quantile autoregression. As for the main results, this study shows that the sentiment of media pessimism predict reductions in the return of IBOVESPA of -28.72 basis points and optimism sentiment predict increase of 22 basis points on the market return when low performances market (low return). As for the volatility, I observed that media pessimism corroborates with the reduction of volatility. In the periods of high uncertainty, the sentiment of pessimism led to reductions in returns, in the circumstances of high or low market performance, predicting -76.21 basis points on the low performance (q.05), and reductions of -81.94 points (q.95) on the high performance. Regarding the forecast of volatility, the results that the textual sentiment is a predictor of volatility, which contributes to minimizes the forecast errors of volatility. Therefore, we can conclude that the information coming from newspapers in Brazil affect the perception of investors in moments of greater uncertainty in the market and in the economy. The work has contributed to the discussions about the role of the media in the stock market of emerging countries, raising evidence that textual sentiment of news can provide information for risk management.NenhumaO objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o efeito do sentimento textual das notícias financeiras sobre o comportamento dos preços no mercado acionário brasileiro, buscando respaldo teórico no Teorema da Concordância, no viés da negatividade e na Hipótese do Mercado Eficiente. Para analisar o efeito do tom das notícias sobre o comportamento de oscilação dos preços no mercado brasileiro, foi verificada a influência que o sentimento textual das notícias exercia sobre o retorno do índice IBOVESPA e sobre o risco (volatilidade do retorno) e, analisada a influência do sentimento textual na previsão do risco do mercado. Para alcançar o objetivo do trabalho, foram utilizados os valores diários dos índices: IBOVESPA, DJIA, VIX e S&P500, e analisados os textos das notícias financeiras do Jornal Valor Econômico (45.304 matérias), no período de 25 de julho de 2011 a 30 de junho 2017, correspondendo a 1.470 observações diárias. A escolha das variáveis preditoras da volatilidade foi realizada pelo método de regressão quantílica l-penalizada - LASSO, e o impacto do sentimento sobre o mercado foi avaliado por regressão quantílica autoregressiva. Os resultados levantados mostram que o sentimento de pessimismo da mídia prever reduções do retorno do IBOVESPA em -28.72 pontos-base e o sentimento de otimismo prever aumento de 22 pontos-base sobre o retorno do mercado, quando o mercado apresenta baixo desempenhos (baixo retorno). Em relação à volatilidade, foi observado que o pessimismo da mídia corrobora com a redução da volatilidade. Nos períodos de alta incerteza econômica foi verificado que o sentimento de pessimismo induz a reduções nos retornos, nas circunstâncias de melhor ou pior desempenho do mercado, chegando a prever quedas de -76.21 pontos-base sobre os menores retornos do mercado (q.05), e reduções de 81.94 pontos-base (q.95) sobre os maiores retornos do mercado (melhor desempenho). Os resultados sobre a previsão da volatilidade, mostram que o sentimento textual é um preditor da volatilidade, que contribui com a redução dos erros de previsão da volatilidade. Portanto, conclui-se que, as informações provenientes dos jornais, no Brasil, afetam a percepção dos investidores nos momentos que existe uma maior incerteza no mercado e na economia. O trabalho contribuiu com as discussões sobre o papel da mídia no mercado acionário de países emergentes, levantando evidências de que o sentimento textual das notícias pode fornecer informações importantes para o gerenciamento de risco
