This dissertation has as objective to investigate the discursive networks that tried to build a local identity based on education in the beginning of the 20th century in the city of Campina Grande/PB. This study suggests an interest on the historicity of the emergence of a preoccupation over teaching and problematizes the conditions in which the rising of an idea of education is possible attached to the idea of modernity. We apprehend how the discourses of progress were associated to the pedagogical discourse in the attempt to transform Campina Grande into a modern and civilized city.
