Graduation date: 1988The effect of solution nitrogen (N) and phosphorus\ud (P) concentrations on biomass production and N₂ fixation\ud of red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.) seedlings grown in\ud perlite-filled pots in a climate controlled growth room\ud were studied. Nodulated seedlings were subjected to 12\ud different nutrient solution combinations of nitrogen and\ud phosphorus and one sodium control treatment. Carbohydrate\ud allocation, nitrogen fixation (using acetylene reduction\ud (AR) methods) and leaf N and P concentrations were measured\ud to determine the relative importance of external nitrogen\ud and phosphorus concentrations on plant growth and nutrient\ud status, nodule production, and nitrogen fixation activity.\ud Nodule biomass...
