The paper discusses evidences that help to reflect on the construction of the times of school, particularly the relationship between age and attendance in the schools of the region of Italian colonization in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (the old colonies of Dona Isabel, Caxias do Sul and Conde d’Eu) from 1875 to 1930. These times are ritualized by the ceremonies associated to the celebration of particular dates, the beginning of the school year, the expected period of stay at school, the age to start and to finish school education.
