O gênero estudado é principalmente neotropical, com poucas espécies ocorrendo no sul dos Estados Unidos da América do Norte. São conhecidas trinta e quatro espécies, das quais vinte e cinco são estudadas, redescritas e ilustradas e, quatorze espécies são propostas como novas. A chave para identificação inclui todas as espécies aqui estudadas. A distribuição geográfica conhecida é apresentada sob a forma de três mapas. Philornis é um gênero cujas larvas são associadas a aves, ora vivendo intradermicamente (sub-cutâneos), ora escarificando a pele das aves, ou ainda alimentando-se de detritos ou dejetos dos hospedeiros (vida livre nos ninhos). Sob o título “Relações ecológicas com aves” são tecidas algumas considerações sobre tais associações e uma relação das espécies com seus “hospedeiros” sintetiza o conhecimento atual dessas associações.Deals with the genus Philornis Meinert, 1890 (Diptera, Muscidae, Cyrtoneurininae). This genus is neotropical, with few species occuring in southern United States, and includes thirty four species. From these, twenty five are studied, redescribed and illustrated, and fourteen additional species are proposed as new. The identification key includes all species here studied . The known geographical distribution is shown in three maps. The larvae. of Philornis are associated with birds, living intradermically, or living free in nests (feeding on blood or bird ' s faeces). Under the title “Relações ecológicas com aves” (Ecological relationships with birds) a few considerations are made, and a list of flies and their respective "bird-hosts" summarizes the present knowledge of these associations
