Graduation date: 2010The Sandinistas embarked on a unique and controversial path of democratization between 1979 and 1990 that focused first on expanding human development due to Nicaragua's historical underdevelopment before holding elections. This differs widely from methods advocated still today that emphasize expanding civil and political liberties and holding elections.
