The effects of different presentations of natural preys on growth of the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis.

Frozen triturated shrimp was presented to juvenile cuttlefish either included in sausages or agglutinated with gelatine. Ingestion rates of these diets was higher or similar to the control (frozen shrimp), but values obtained are not reliable due to losses during the process of eating (cuttlefish beak macerates the piece of food and losses are considerable) and lixiviation. Acceptance of the prepared diets was good but no growth was obtained with any of the prepared diets. This was unexpected, since the shrimp did not suffer any changes besides mechanical process of maceration, and should have kept their nutritional quality. Therefore, one has to suppose that the trituration process might have influenced the quality of the shrimp as food for cuttlefish, and also that indeed the ingestion rates reported here are considerably overestimated.Se intentó verificar la aceptación de presas naturales para obtener buen crecimiento y supervivencia (camarón) y una dieta natural (calamar) en formas y aspectos distintos a los de la presa congelada o fresca. Se trituró el camarón y se presentó embutido, como salchichas, o aglutinado con gelatina en forma de bolas; y el calamar aglutinado con gelatina, en forma de bolas. Se determino tasa de crecimiento y aceptación (ingestión). La tasa de ingestión de dietas preparadas fue mayor o similar que la del camarón congelado, pero no es un dato fiable, debido a la alta lixiviación y a perdidas por  trituración mecánica del pico del choco. Todas las dietas preparadas  fueron relativamente bien aceptadas pero las tasas de crecimiento obtenidas fueron negativas. Suponemos que las tasas de ingestión de estas dietas están sobre estimados.
