Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, an invisible disability: An attempt to raise awareness in the Hispanic community

Includes bibliographical references (leaves 45-50)Hispanics are one of the minority groups most severely affected by a lack of mental health care and management in the US (Pastor and Reuben, 2008). Currently, a huge discrepancy exists between identification and treatment of individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the Hispanic community (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008). This problem is mostly due to language, cultural differences, and a lack of appropriate diagnostic or screening tools to aid clinicians (Alegria, et al., 2007). The purpose of this project is to create an informative pamphlet, written in Spanish, which will provide basic information about the characteristics of ADHD and may serve as a self-referred diagnostic tool for clinicians who work with this population
