The Effect of Gender, Socioeconomic Status, and Perception of School Support on Depression Among Adolescents

This study examines the effect of gender, socioeconomic status (SES), and perception of school support on depression among adolescents. The dependent variable for this study is depression among adolescents. The independent variables are gender, socioeconomic status, and perception of school support. The findings of this study revealed that there is a correlation between gender, socioeconomic status, and perception of school support on depression among adolescents. The study showed that being female is a key predictor of depression. Another key predictor of depression among adolescents is the perception of school support. Specifically, the study demonstrated that adolescents who feel that adults listen to them at school and who feel praised at school present better mental health. In addition to gender and perception of school support, poverty is also associated with depression among adolescents. More specifically, those living in poverty are more likely to report that everything is an effort and suffer from feelings of depression. Social work practitioners should consider the effect of these variables on depression among adolescents when designing programs and services
