Effects of Adult Supervision, Role Models, and Substance Use on Obesity Among Hispanic Adolescents

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between role models, adult supervisor, and substance use and obesity among Hispanic adolescents. The California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) 2011-2012 Teen Data File was used in this study. Various analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between socioeconomic status, age, gender and obesity. Variables that had a statistically significant relationship with obesity were also studied. This study suggests that male respondents were more likely to be obese than female respondents. Bivariate analysis revealed that adolescents who have someone they admire are in better overall health than adolescents who do not have someone they admire. Also, results showed participants who were overweight or obese had less school support. This study also demonstrated that adolescents who have had ???a few sips??? of alcohol drink have more ???unhealthy days???. Multivariate analysis revealed that higher school support system increases the chance of adolescent overweight or obesity. These results indicate that social workers need implement interventions that involve positive role models and adult supervision when working with obese adolescents
