Weekly cumulative tests versus chapter tests in mathematics

Weekly cumulative tests are a set of questions or problems that cover all information\ud taught from the beginning of the school year until the time of the test. They\ud continually measure a student???s ability, skill, or performance. Chapter tests can be\ud defined as a set of questions or problems from a single chapter used as a means of\ud evaluating the abilities, skills, or performance of an individual on specific\ud information. The purpose of the study was to determine if there was difference\ud between the pre-test and post-test scores of seventh grade pre-algebra students taking\ud weekly cumulative tests or chapter tests. This study consisted of two groups of\ud seventh grade pre-algebra students who received the same type of instruction. The\ud treatment group had 22 students who took weekly cumulative tests (12) throughout\ud one semester of the school year. The control group had 24 students who took chapter\ud tests (6) at the end of each chapter throughout one semester of the school year. A pretest\ud was given to both groups before any instruction took place and a post-test was\ud given after one semester. An independent t-test was used to see if there was a\ud difference in post-test scores from control group to the treatment group and to see if\ud there was a difference in change from the pre-test scores to the post-test scores\ud between the two groups. Lastly, an ANCOVA was conducted to find the difference\ud in post-test scores using the pre-test scores as a covariate to control for existing\ud differences
