PMD compensation in fiber optics

The objective of this project is to understand the major developments of Polarized light in Fiber Optics and also to present the background required to overcome the problems associated with Polarization mode dispersion (PMD). The aim of this project is to read the literature to obtain more than a desc1iptive understanding of this subject as well as other polarization subjects such as Optical Scramblers, Polarization Controllers, Polarization combiners, etc. Also this project provides not only an understanding of the major developments of polarized light in fiber optics but also presents the required background in polarized light. The project starts with an introductory review of the basic concepts and continues with more advanced topics, including a thorough review of Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) mitigation techniques. Then the detailed study of the adaptive PMD compensation system at 1 OGbps is done. Different components and their functionality in recovering the transmitting signal at 1 OGbps are studied. The project also includes analysis of other polarization effects such as polarization-dependent loss and the interaction of PMD with fiber nonlinearity. The project concentrates on calculating and simulating the Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in single mode fibers. The Simulation results showing the distortion to the transmitted signal with the effect of PMD and its compensation using the PMD compensation circuit are shown using the Opti-System 8.0 Software
