A counselors guide: Using outside resources to help our students

This project will focus on the importance of the counselor's role as it pertains to obtaining resources from the community around them. The project will focus on the involvement of school counselors in their communities and how these resources are used to help benefit their students through various types of support. These support services are needed because school counselors manage many responsibilities as well as large caseloads that do not allow them the adequate time to spend with all of their student's . It then becomes more difficult for counselors to meet the in depth needs of their students without the community partnerships. Having information about outside resources allows the counselor to do a better job of assisting students with their specific needs. Resources in communities are often times not tapped into because people do not know that they exist. In giving students the information about the support they can receive outside of the school environment they will have multiple support systems which will in tum lead them to be more successful. The small manual included in this project demonstrates how counselors can put together a list of resources in their community to help refer students to the proper places for support. Resource lists like this one, can be utilized by parents, staff, and students. It helps community members identify the agencies in their community that they can go to for guidance and support to address current issues
