This present an assortment of vocal challenges for the singer, and an interesting program for the listener. Alessandro Scarlatti composed over 600 cantatas in his lifetime. Fermate, omai fermate is in a lyrical, early baroque style displaying a series of contrasting ideas in the form of homophonic recitatives and arias. The earlier songs of Gustav Mahler, taken from Des Knaben Wunderhorn and Lieder and gesange aus der Jugendzeit show the composer???s interest in folk elements. The Ruckert Lieder exhibit a through-composed style. Mahler???s songs are expressive post-Romantic compositions that treat the accompanist as an equal partner with the singer. Gioachino Rossaini wrote L???italiana in Algeri in May of 1813. He called it a ???Dramma Giocoso??? as Mozart had called Don Giovanni, and it was Rossini???s first true comic masterpiece. He made his reputation in the classical opera Buffa. Cruda Sorte is a typical example of his florid style of vocal writing. The next set is a mixed group of American and English compositions. Drawn from the Four Last Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Tired, and Hands, Eyes, and heart are songs with texts by his wife, set in a lyrical style. Samuel Barber employs leaps in the vocal line, often used in 20th century compositions, in My Lizard. Harmonic tone color and rhythmic displacement re-creates the blues in solitary Hotel. Charles Ives and Ernest Charles take a neo-romantic approach in An Old Flame and When I have Sung my Songs. Joaquin Nin was a Cuban born pianist/composer whose songs reflect an intense interest in the Spanish Baroque era, especially in his use of polyrhythms. His accompaniments are extremely difficult, reflected clearly in this group. The program sought to strike a balance between the old and the new, the Baroque and the Romantic, with a sprinkling of elements of blues and folk traits. All of this is intended to enhance audience enjoyment, and musically educate the listener
