The recital opens with a small ensemble for harpsichord, flute, and viola da gamba. John Stanley (1713-1786), a blind English composer, was greatly influenced by Joseph Haydn. The work is in three movements with an opening largo characterized by the French style of the suite. The second movement is very active in scale passages, arpeggiated chords, and long sequenced sections through diatonic progressions. The last movement is like a short gigue.
