Includes bibliographical references (page 37)Diophantine analysis was named after the Greek\ud Diophantus, of the third century, who proposed many\ud indeterminate problems in his arithmetic. He was content\ud with finding single rational solutions to his\ud problems although they usually had an infinitude of\ud such solutions. He used so many special techniques\ud for a solution of a particular problem that it was\ud difficult to know how to attack a similar problem.\ud Many later writers required solutions in integers so\ud that the term Diophantine analysis is used also in\ud this altered sense.
