Graduate recital in clarinet

Includes recorded audio files in WAV and MP3 formats, 120:49 in lengthIn selecting the music compositions to be performed for the Master's Recital, the primary concern was to select material which was good literature and, at the same time, not frequently performed. The only exception ot this criteria was the Brahms, First Clarinet Sonata. This work is included in the standard repertoire for the clarinet, and consequently, is studied and performed by almost every clarinetist. The Hindemith Sonate, similarly, is steadily becoming a standard work for the clarinet. Another consideration which assumed a dominant role in the program selection was a balanced program. Knowing that an important characteristic of a balanced program is variety, it was decided to include an unaccompanied piece on the program. In choosing the unaccompanied piece, after the selection had been narrowed down to two works, the Miklos Rozsa unaccompanied piece was chosen over the Stravinsky Three pieces for Clarinet for two reasons: (1) The Miklos Rozsa Sonatina for Clarinet is performed much less often than the Stravinsky work; (2) The Miklos Rozsa work offers advanced explotation of the clarinet's technical capabilities. With the emphasis still on balanced programming, the final two works for the program were chosen. The Poulenc Clarinet Sonata is, in effect, a light, humorous, whimsical piece which displays both the lyrical and technical facility of the clarinet. The Hindemith Sonate, in contrast to the Romantic style of the Brahms sonata, provides the listener with a twentieth century example of sonata form. The time difference between these two works, additionally, affords the listener a comparison of stylistic tendencies. (See more in text)..
