The hills of disorder : reflections on cinema and history

This thesis investigates how cinema can creat visualizations of history on its own grounds. The kind of legibility of history enabled by the cinema studied here is driven by the combination of disparate temporalities. My claim is that by deploying aesthetic operations as montage or by creating scenes from the order of the untimely, cinema disrupts history as an orderly chronological sequence and yields new ways for framing the ???contemporary???. Focusing on a specific case study - the film The Hills o f Disorder (2006), by Andrea Tonacci those operations are problematized in the context of the Indian communities\ud and the zones of non-visibility they occupy in the Brazilian official history and visual archive.\ud Keywords: cinema and history; untimely; montage; philosophy of histor
