A CAI program : titration of intravenous medications

Includes bibliographical references (pages 78-81)The issue addressed by this project is a major concern for nursing education: competency of nursing students and nursing practitioners in the safe calculation of medication dosages and infusion rates of intravenous medications. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the major factors\ud contributing to this problem such as the differing entering abilities of students in basic mathematics and the relatively unsuccessful record of traditional methods of teaching dosage calculation in schools of nursing. As part of this project the author developed the CAI program PHARM to provide experience in calculating infusion rates of the medications Heparin, Lidocaine, and Dopamine for the student in critical care nursing. The program includes a series of problems the student is asked to solve and provides tutorial material for the user who needs additional instruction in the calculation process. (See more in text.
