The effects of gentrification on Black and Latino students in urban public schools

With the growing desire to revitalize the middle class, gentrification has taken an all time\ud high in urban areas. While the general rhetoric around gentrification emphasizes rebuilding poor, urban communities and the racial and socioeconomic mixing of different groups, the reality of gentrification tends to show extremely different results, especially amongst Black and Latino youth in urban public schools. This study examines the impact of gentrification in urban communities and how they impact the educational experiences of Black and Latino youth. This study will also look at how gentrification affects immigration and migration patterns of Latinos and other ethnic groups and how these patterns inadvertently create tension or a competition of existing resources for these groups in a gentrified area. In communities as diverse as those in the Bay Area, immigration and gentrification intersect and become a much more complex social issue. This study will explain how that intersection affects Black and Latino students??? academic success in urban gentrified areas as families compete for existing resources as one group moves in and the other is pushed out. By examining White Flight in the 1950s-1960s to gentrification when these middle class, usually White families move back into the area, we find that the economic power and social capacities do revitalize poorer, urban communities, but these changes only affect the middle class while causing little to no change, or even marginalization for indigenous residents and immigrant grou
