Parental behavior correlates of dependent and self-critical dimensions of depression

Includes bibliographical references (pages 30-33)This study tested a model of depression which distinguished\ud between dependent and self-critical dimensions of depression and\ud related each dimension to different patterns of parental\ud behavior. It was predicted that both aspects of depression would\ud be related to parental conflict and strict control on the part of\ud the parents, that dependent depression would specifically be\ud associated with maternal dominance and maternal emphasis on\ud conformity, and that self-critical depression would specifically\ud be associated with parental emphasis on achievement and parental\ud inconsistency in expressing love. Two hundred and forty three\ud female college students were administered the Depressive\ud Experiences Questionnaire, the Wessman-Ricks depression scale,\ud and several rating scales pertaining to parental behavior.\ud Results of two hierarchical regressions were consistent with the\ud prediction concerning self-critical depression but failed to\ud confirm the portion of the model dealing with dependent\ud depression
