The educational and professional backgrounds of southern California city managers

Includes bibliographical references (page 34)A Thesis\ud Presented to the\ud Faculty of The Consortium of the California State UniversityThe purpose of this investigation is to document and\ud compare the educational and professional backgrounds of city\ud managers currently working in the Southern California area.\ud The results of this study can be used to evaluate the\ud current state of the city management profession.\ud Data was collected by means of a written\ud questionnaire with questions relating to managers' personal\ud background, as well as their career patterns and job\ud characteristics.\ud Respondents were chosen by identifying those managers\ud who were operating within a council-manager form of\ud government. Other forms of government, and manager types\ud were excluded from this study.\ud This study indicates additional research is needed in\ud the following areas: (1) a similar study concentrating on\ud the training of currently practicing city managers, (2) the\ud development of coping instruments for managers to\ud effectively deal with job pressures, and (3) a study to\ud evaluate the effectiveness of the council-manager form of\ud government in today's society
